HAEMOLYTIC DISEASE OF THE NEWBORN 1

In times past, many couples suffered from recurrent still births and miscarriages. Some also gave birth to severely deformed children. The causes of these loses and painful experiences were unknown to them. They’ve been attributed to witches and wizards. Strange superstitions were thought to be the causes. Couples were made to perform rituals, some of which were “nasty” and inhumane. Some were made to drink very bitter and unhygienic concoctions that were detrimental to their health. The quest to have children after several loses as well as societal pressures were enough to make couples do anything even if it demands walking through fire.
In the typical African societies gods, deities, and spiritualists were consulted to ascertain the causes. Lots of resources were wasted on unending search for solutions that never existed in these places. Even in our modern times these primitive practices still go on. Many lives, especially those of women, are lost contributing to the already existing high maternal mortality.
Thanks to scientific knowledge, the phenomenon of still births, miscarriages, birth of deformed children can be investigated and medical assistance provided. Many of such misfortunes are due to a condition called HAEMOLYTIC DISEASE OF THE NEWBORN.
In my next episode I will be providing insight into the actual causes and how it can be prevented.
